'Black Panther' Opening Breaks Box Office Records

The newest superhero movie from Marvel is gathering all sorts of records for its opening weekend including strongest February opening ever.

HOLLYWOOD, CA – That noise you hear is "Black Panther" shattering all kinds of box office records. The newest superhero movie from Marvel is the strongest ever opening for a movie in February. It is also the biggest opening for a movie directed by an African-American.

It is also the second largest opening for a Marvel movie and the fifth highest opening of any movie. Ever.

In all, the film took in $192 million over its first three days and with Presidents Day providing a fourth day for the weekend, Disney estimates it will take in $218 million for its first weekend.

According to industry tracker comScore.com, when you add in box office from overseas, the total is $361 million.

The film, starring Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa, the king of the African country of Wakanda, blew past its competition.

"Peter Rabbit" was number two with $22.5 million, "Fifty Shades Freed" was third with $18 million. "Jumannji: Welcome to the Jungle" was fourth with $10 million" and "The 15:17 to Paris" was fifth.
