'Bohemian Rhapsody' Screenwriter Drops Suit Over Film's Profits

The Queen biopic grossed $910.91 million; screenwriter Anthony McCarten had claimed he was entitled to a cut of the profit.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — The screenwriter of "Bohemian Rhapsody" has dropped his lawsuit against the film's co-producer; the scribe had alleged that he was owed unpaid profits from the successful 2018 Queen biopic.

Screenwriter Anthony McCarten's attorneys this week asked a Santa Monica Superior Court judge to drop the case against producer Graham King's GK Films and production WAGW Inc.

The filing asks for the suit to be dropped with prejudice, which means it cannot be refiled. No settlement terms were released.

McCarten had claimed he made a deal with King to receive 5 percent of GK's take. King then handed over that deal and others to Fox — now owned by Disney — after the studio joined the project, Deadline reported.

The Oscar-winning film, which stars Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, grossed $910.91 million on a $52 million budget, which almost certainly amounted to a fat profit for those entitled to a cut.

McCarten alleged he didn't see anything from the film's stellar performance.

The Oscar-nominated screenwriter is known for his work on big-budget biopics, including "The Theory of Everything," "The Two Popes," and "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody."
