Cost-Saving Tips for Adopting a Dog
Tips and ideas around town on how to save money when adopting a rescue dog.

One of the harshest realities of the economic downturn has been the surrender of pets to local shelters. While I’ve always dreamed of having a dog, being perennially short on cash (yet long on love) has made it difficult for me to make this commitment.
After lots of research, I adopted a rescue dog four weeks ago. I got him from the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Rescue Club of Southern California. His name is Shaggy and I love him more than I ever thought I could. As far as the financial commitment, you will be spending money, but there are ways to be more economical than you think:
Getting a dog: There are several animal rescues around town, as well as breed-specific rescues. There is a fee for the dog, but it is much less than buying a puppy from a breeder or (eeks) pet store. Petfinder is also a great resource for finding available dogs.

Training: Adopting a rescue dog means you’re not only a good soul, but your dog will be neutered and housebroken. S/he will likely be trained to walk nicely on a leash so the basics are already all set.
Supplies: Petco’s Think Adoption First offers discounts and coupons to those who’ve just adopted a rescue. Plus, pet stores like (1929 North Bronson Avenue, 323-464-9600) and (7288 W. Sunset Blvd. at Fuller, 323-851-0133) offer reward programs. I’ve saved quite a bit of money just in the few visits that I’ve made.

Waste: With the plastic bag being phased out by many grocers, it may be a tough pill to swallow to buy “doggie pick-up bags.” In dog parks around Hollywood, there are dispensers that provide the bags for free. Just don’t be greedy!
I’ve also been considering finding a way to create a pet registry, like a bride or soon-to-be mother would create for her joyous event. Sure, it’s silly but if you think about all of the money you’ve spent on shower and wedding gifts, getting some essentials for you pup from your friends and family seems like a good idea. I’ll keep you posted!
