Hester Street Fair Debuts in Hollywood

The fair brings some New York City energy to central Hollywood.

The one question that I absolutely hate answering is naturally my most favorite one to ask: New York or Los Angeles?

Innocent enough, but depending who asks it, this simple query often times turns into a third degree interrogation.  Which is why, perhaps, as a cop out, my answer remains as non-committal as possible: The two cities perfectly complement each other.  What New York lacks, Los Angeles has in surplus, and vice versa.

But what I love is when I notice these two cities acting like friends and helping each other out.  Which brings me to the brilliance behind the idea for Hester Goes Hollywood, it debuted Saturday at the corner of Argyle Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard.

The Hester Street Fair, brought to you by The Big Social, is a street market located on the lower east side of Manhattan.  This summer, LA is getting a little taste of New York’s energy, and the street fair is coming to Hollywood for a four-month trial period.

As their website states, “New York’s favorite outdoor market is coming to Hollywood this summer for a series of 4 fun filled FREE events one block East of the historic intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine. The Hester Street Fair will be curating a collection of some of LA’s favorite artisans, craftsmen, collectors, food, brands, bloggers and music.”

was a great start for Hester.  The parking lot was full of food trucks paired with various tented boutiques selling art, clothing and other fun collections.  The crowd was wonderfully diverse, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves quite effortlessly.

It may be argued that the difference between New York and Los Angeles is characterized by how one discovers the presence of energy.  In New York, one can walk down 1st Avenue and stumble upon something as lively as a street fair but, in Los Angeles, more often than not we find ourselves getting in our cars to find the action.

Hollywood is the perfect place for us to begin to practice what big city street life might feel like.  I look forward to Hester's return next month.
