Cocaine Crash Leads to Officer Death, Possible Life in Prison

A North Hollywood woman pleads no contest in the death of Officer Cortijo. She faces life in prison

A North Hollywood woman is now facing 15 years to life in prison or her role in the death of an officer in a DUI crash. KTLA reported on the matter earlier this month.

Qaneak Shaney Cobb plead no contest to second degree murder that happened in 2014. Cobb rear-ended the motorcycle of Officer Cortijo while he was stopped at a red light. The crash crushed the officer between two vehicles. He died four days later.

Later drug tests showed that Cobb was high on cocaine at the time of the crash. She was arrested. While she had plead not guilty to several charges related to the case, she eventually changed her plea.

Officer Cortijo was well-regarded by his fellow officers and was known for his skill at DUI arrests. Flags were flown at half-mast to honor his death.

Disproving a DUI for substances other than alcohol is extremely difficult. And when the person killed or injured is someone admired by the city, prosecutors will take special efforts to try to convict you. Sometimes the best course of action really is to admit what happened and allow your lawyer to argue for a lesser sentence.
