Egyptian Theatre Reopens After Netflix's $70M Renovation
The Hollywood Boulevard gem has reopened after three years of renovations.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — After a three-year, $70 million renovation, Netflix has officially reopened the historic Egyptian Theatre.
The Nov. 9 reopening comes less than a month after the Hollywood Boulevard theater's 101st birthday and three years after Netflix bought the theater from the American Cinematheque — saving the organization from certain death.
Faced with over $8 million in essential theater renovations, a financially ailing Cinematheque ironed out a complex agreement with Netflix in order to maintain its own solvency and complete the needed rehab, detailed in a 2020 report by IndieWire.

At the time, Netflix's plans called for seismic retrofitting, mechanical upgrades, roof replacement, repairs, audio upgrades and other restoration.
In addition to showing 70mm prints, the Egyptian is one of exceedingly few theaters in the U.S. equipped to handle nitrate prints.
