Four Vehicle Collision Blamed on Drunk Driver

A four-vehicle collision on northbound 405 is believed to have been the fault of a drunken driver who was driving the wrong way.

Wrong way drivers are often the cause of the most fatal kind of collisions: head-on collisions. While some wrong-way drivers are people who are merely unfamiliar with the area and go the wrong way or elderly drivers who become confused, the majority of wrong-way collisions involve people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. KTLA reports on a wrong-way collision.

A four-vehicle collision is believed to have been the fault of a drunken driver who was driving the wrong way.

The California Highway Patrol reported in a news release that the crash occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on the Northbound 405 just south of Wilshire Boulevard.

A driver in a Chevrolet Tahoe was headed southbound and collided head-on with a Ford Explorer traveling in the proper direction. The accident caused a second vehicle to spin out of control and strike a Honda Civic. A fourth vehicle was hit by debris that went flying from the Civic.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and five people were rushed to local hospitals. Two were left in critical condition by the accident. The other three suffered from serious injuries.

28-year-old Abdul Aziz M. Alnuaim was identified as the wrong-way driver and was among the injured. Police arrested him for suspicion of driving under the influence.

A police statement said that alcohol and/or drugs appeared to be factors in the collision. The crash remains under investigation.
