Freeway Skateboarding Is the Latest Scary Trend in California

Videos are popping up all over social media of skateboarders doing tricks on jampacked freeways.

Because rush hour traffic isn’t irritating enough, there’s a new trend out there dubbed the Freeway Challenge in which skateboarders perform tricks in the fast lane, weaving through freeway traffic.

No serious injuries have been reported yet.

However, the trend is still young. It’s taken off on social media and quickly captured the attention of horrified drivers as well as the California Highway Patrol.

"You don't know what the other car is going to do... or if a motorcycle is passing. They could strike you and kill you," Officer Edgar Figueroa told KTLA.

CHP investigators are monitoring social media to identify the skaters in videos doing tricks along busy freeways from San Diego to Simi Valley, according to KLTA. Those involved from the drivers to the skaters could be in trouble, CHP officials said.

One of the most prominent people to do it is pro-skater Nakel Smith seen in one video performing tricks on Highway 110 in Los Angeles.

After his ride was featured in a KTLA story, he took to Instagram to discourage others from trying the trick.

“I never told anybody else to try this. I’m a professional. Don’t be like me,” he wrote.

But the warning was too late, a video of him doing tricks in downtown traffic has earned thousands of likes.

Twitter abounds with photos and pictures of skateboarders risking their lives under #freewaychallenge.

I did it before they called it #freewaychallenge
