Good Samaritan Shot Trying To Stop A Man From Beating A Dog

Police hope someone will identify a gunman who shot at two passersby while he was beating a dog on a Hollywood apartment balcony.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — A Good Samaritan who tried to stop a man from beating a dog in the Hollywood area was shot Monday night, and now police are asking for help finding the gunman.

The shooting occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Monday when two passersby saw a man on an apartment balcony beating a dog in the area of La Brea and Willoughby avenues, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

"The witnesses yelled at the suspect to let go of the dog," according to the LAPD. "The suspect argued back, then produced an unknown type firearm and shot at the witnesses, striking one."

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in stable condition, and the shooter fled the scene. Police set up a perimeter to search for the suspect throughout the night. However, the man got away. Authorities don't believe the suspect lives at the apartment. He may be a boyfriend of a local resident, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The suspect was described as being about 21 years old, 6-feet-2 inches tall and weighing around 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt and burgundy pants, according to the LAPD.

Authorities did not release information about the condition of the dog.
