The Oscars ceremony is no stranger to big moments overshadowing the night's wins. Sunday night's show was no different, as best actor nominee Will Smith stormed the stage to slap presenter Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
The audience and viewers were left in shock at the incident, with many believing it was a staged skit. Later in the night, Will Smith went on to win the Best Actor award, his first Oscar win ever, and tearfully apologized to the Academy for his violent behavior.
Aside from the slap heard around the world, the ceremony was filled with some beautiful moments as Hollywood gathered together in what seemingly felt like "back to normal" for the first time post-pandemic. Among these highlights was the Academy reuniting the casts of "Juno," "White Men Can't Jump" and "The Godfather," as well as live performances by the Best Song nominees including Billie Eilish for "No Time To Die" and Becky G, Megan Thee Stallion and Luis Fonsi for "Encanto."

In addition, Jane Campion took home her first statue for Best Director for her work on "The Power of the Dog," marking the third win for a female director. Campion also made history being the first female ever to be nominated twice in the directing category. Ariana DeBose took home the Best Supporting Actress win for her role as Anita in "West Side Story (2021)," following in the footsteps of Rita Moreno, who snagged the statue for her work in the same role for the original film.
