SigAlert: Jumper Talked Down After 10-Hour 101 Freeway Closure

The (Hollywood) 101 Freeway in Hollywood was shut down for more than 10 hours while authorities talked down a jumper.

UPDATED AT 10:13 A.M.: A man who had been threatening to jump from an overpass at Hollywood Boulevard onto the Hollywood (101) Freeway for more than 10 hours has been safely taken into custody and will be taken to a hospital for an evaluation, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart says.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A jumper forced the closure of the Hollywood (101) Freeway at Hollywood Boulevard overnight and into the morning rush hour.

The closure backed up rush hour traffic for miles, and residents are strongly advised to avoid the area. Thousands of commuters are trapped in traffic that wasn't showing any signs of movement as of 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The backup starts as far back as the 5 Freeway.

"There is a potential jumper, and it's been going on all night," said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Officer Drake Madison. "They are just trying to bring this guy down, so he doesn't hurt himself."

The incident began shortly after midnight, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. It's an unusual situation, with authorities working through the night to convince the jumper to move to safety.
