Woman Killed When Car Careens off Overpass onto Oncoming 110 Freeway Traffic

The dramatic crash over the 3rd Street overpass caused several wrecks and shut down the northbound lanes of the Harbor (110) Freeway.

LOS ANGELES, CA -- A woman was killed Thursday when her car crashed through a metal fence and fell from a freeway overpass onto the northbound lanes of the Harbor (110) Freeway in the Westlake district.

The crash took place at 3:58 a.m. just north of Third Street, said California Highway Patrol Officer Dion Conley. The vehicle veered off the Third Street overpass and fell onto the northbound lanes, he said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department retrieved the body of the driver, a 50- year-old woman, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The vehicle struck several cars when it landed and caused multiple crashes but information about other injuries was not immediately available.

All northbound lanes were closed at Third Street for the investigation. The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 4:19 a.m. The lanes were finally cleared and the freeway reopened at 8:07 a.m., according to the CHP.
