2 Killed, 1 Injured In Crash While Fleeing Border Patrol: Police

The driver ran a red light at an Otay Mesa intersection and hit a semi, officials said.

SAN DIEGO, CA – Two men were killed and a woman critically injured Tuesday evening in a collision between a car and a big rig at an Otay Mesa intersection.

The fatal wreck at Otay Mesa Road and Sanyo Avenue was reported shortly before 6:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

A man and woman were seen about 5 p.m. on surveillance video illegally crossing into the United States at the Otay Mesa border crossing, then running to a car that appeared to be waiting for them and speeding away, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.

Border Patrol agents attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver did not stop.

"They initiated their lights and sirens, at which point the vehicle failed to yield to those emergency lights and sirens and fled from the Border Patrol agents," according to Border Patrol Agent Justin Castrejone. "We're hearing from (some of) the agents here of speeds in excess of 100 mph."

The driver ran a red light at the intersection and collided with the semi, killing the driver and his front passenger, the Border Patrol said. The woman was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

The names of those involved in the crash were not immediately released.

The intersection of Otay Mesa Road and Sanyo Avenue was closed while agents investigated the crash.
