Border 15 Fire Spread Stopped: Cal Fire/SDCF

Firefighting crews say they have stopped the spread of a 30-acre brush fire burning near Otay Mesa.

OTAY MESA, CA β€” Firefighters say they have stopped the spread of a 30-acre brush fire burning east of Otay Mesa, near the U.S.-Mexico border. This was the first of two fires to break out in the area within the span of two days.

The fire broke out a few miles east of Otay Mesa and southeast of Otay Lake around 9:30 p.m. Monday, Cal Fire/ San Diego County Fire Department tweeted. Firefighters first reported that the Border 15 Fire was 15 acres and spreading at a moderate rate of speed, but was not threatening any structures.

At midnight, Cal Fire wrote that the fire had spread to 30 acres and was 10 percent contained.

Steep rugged terrain in the area presented a challenge, but firefighters continued working through the night.

At 8:04 a.m. Tuesday, Cal Fire said that they had stopped the spread and the 30-acre fire is 30 percent contained. Firefighters will spend the day building the containment line and mopping up hot spots. No injuries or property damage has been reported.
