Imperial Beach Jaywalker Struck, Suffers Serious Head Injury

IMPERIAL BEACH, CA – A man who attempted to cross a busy street in Imperial Beach was struck by a car and subsequently suffered a serious head injury, sheriff's officials said Thursday.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, several vehicles swerved to avoid the 27-year-old man as he walked through traffic Wednesday evening on Palm Avenue near Ninth Street. He ultimately, however, stepped into the path of a Nissan Altima and was struck shortly after 10:30 p.m., sheriff's Sgt. Luis Chavez said.

Chavez said the 19-year-old driver of the Altima immediately stopped her car and called for help. The victim suffered major head trauma in the crash and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment.
