Man Hit In Head With Hammer, Phone Stolen In South Bay

Three suspects arrested in the assault, police said.

SAN DIEGO, CA – Three men were arrested on suspicion of hitting an 18-year-old man in the back of his head with a hammer at a park in the Otay Mesa West community of San Diego and snatching his cell phone, a police officer said Sunday.

The victim was rushed to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.

The suspects walked up to the victim a little after 7 p.m. Saturday at 3950 Byrd St. and got into fight with him, Heims said.

During the skirmish one of the suspects hit the man in the back of the head with a hammer. He fell to the ground, his cell phone was taken and the suspects ran to a stopped Kia, he said.

They were seen driving away in the 3900 block of Byrd Street and were stopped a short time later by police, he said.

The suspects were identified as Jorge Gonzalez, 23; Anthony Ambriz, 24, and Cristian Navarro, 29, Heims said.
