Swimming in on 4K Ultra HD, Bluray and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and director Jaume Collet-Serra is a predator waiting in THE SHALLOWS.
Nancy (Blake Lively) is a young woman looking to find some peace after the death of her mother. Remembering Mom speak of a beautiful cove on a secluded Mexican beach, she arrives with surfboard at the ready.
The water is crystal clear and the day is sunny when she hits the waves. Spending the afternoon on the water she calls sister Chloe (Sedona Legge) to share the news. It is Dad (Brett Cullen) who isn’t happy that Nancy has put aside her medical career to surf but that conversation is cut short.

Not wanting to think about it, Nancy goes back to the water. She sees a whale floating in the water and getting to close is attacked by a very large shark. Only 200 yards from shore there is no one around to help and she shares a piece of rock with an injured seagull.
Now Nancy must keep her wits about her if she is to survive the night and outsmart a predator who is very, very patient.

Other cast includes: Oscar Jaenada as Carlos, Pablo Calva as the boy, Diego Espejel as the Drunk Man, Janelle Bailey as Mom and Sully Seagull as the wounded seagull.
Lively definitely carries the film from start to finish, unfortunately the rest of the cast kind of ring the dinner bell. Nancy is smart and that is what helps to keep her alive. Although I probably wouldn’t have done as much as she did, I have to admit I was tense the entire time.
Having the seagull as a stranded rock companion brought moments of comfort and a tad bit of comedy in a life and death situation. A different kind of jaws, THE SHALLOWS is the definition of entertainment because I was absolutely taken wanting to know as the water rises, what Nancy would do next!

The 4K Ultra HD provides High Dynamic Range, Dolby Atmos soundtrack and includes the film and special features on high-def Bluray. The Bonus Materials include Deleted Scenes, Shooting in The Shallows, How to Build a Shark, Finding The Perfect Beach: Lord Howe Island and When Sharks Attack. The film has a running time of 87 minutes and rated PG-13.
THE SHALLOWS is an intense film and what makes it so is Lively’s performance. First of all the beach is gorgeous lulling the audience in (even though we know a set of teeth will show up at any moment). Keeping the story going could be difficult yet this character is a problem solver and what she did with hoop earrings made my jaw drop.
The Bonus Features are very cool especially How to Build a Shark and perhaps that stems from the JAWS days but still very cool. THE SHALLOWS is a nice mixture of suspense, a bad ass shark, a smart surfer and a bird that hangs in and that is all I need for a Friday-night-pizza-and-movie-with-friends event!
In the end – what was once in the deep is now in the shallows!
