SWAT Standoff Ends In Officer-Involved Shooting

The wounded suspect is in custody after standoff near school in South Bay, officials said.

SAN DIEGO, CA – A report of a man firing a gun in a residential neighborhood just north of Paradise Valley Elementary School Thursday prompted a several-hour police standoff that ended with an officer-involved shooting and the wounded suspect in custody.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately available, allegedly fired an assault rifle at a home in the 1800 block of Altamont Court for unknown reasons about 1 p.m., according to San Diego police.

When patrol officers were unable to contact the reported shooter, a SWAT team was called in to take up positions around the house he was believed to be inside.

As the stalemate continued into the mid-afternoon, administrators at the nearby primary school on Alleghany Street directed teachers to keep students locked in their classrooms as a precaution until further notice, said San Diego Unified School District spokeswoman Maureen Magee.

Roughly 20 minutes later, classes were dismissed at the usual time and campus police guided and escorted children out of the school to ensure their safety, according to Magee.
