Want To Vacation In No. 1 Travel Spot In U.S.? Don't Leave Home

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA - San Diego took the top spot for No. 1 domestic destination by Money magazine, beating out New York City (No. 2), Memphis (No. 3) and No. 4 Ft. Lauderdale.

Money magazine released its Best in Travel Awards, where staffers selected the best domestic and international destinations, airlines, hotels, cruises and travel cards based on their value. And for the best domestic spot, San Diego landed in first place due to its "best combination of outdoor attractions, cultural landmarks, great weather and affordable hotels in the country," the editors said.

San Diego also was noted for "best zoo."

Heaping praise on the city, Money magazine writes: "The best weather of any big city in the country (263 sunny days a year). The best zoo in the world (sorry, Bronx). Gorgeous beaches, acclaimed theaters, and new foodie destinations all over town. All that and average four-star hotel rooms go for less than $200 a night. San Diego may be overshadowed by the City of Angels 120 miles to the north, but it’s pretty heavenly too."
