Wrestlers 'Battle by the Beach'

High school grapplers from throughout San Diego County invade IB for an early season mat tournament.

High school wrestlers from around San Diego County came to Imperial Beach Saturday to take part in the Battle by the Beach, the first major wrestling tournament of the season.

The daylong event brought 22 schools and more than 250 athletes to the Mar Vista High gymnasium, with matches concluding late in the afternoon.

Steele Canyon High finished first overall, with Rancho Bernardo second and Monte Vista third.

The Mariners' gym was full of school spirit as coaches, parents and fellow students rooted for their favorites. With a full season of league matches, divisional championships and the Masters Meet ahead, there will be more opportunities for wrestling fans to check out local talent.
