Patch Blog: LCHS Student Heads to Finals in Speech Contest

LCHS senior advances to the finals in speech tournament sponsored by the Pasadena Bar Association

La Canada’s Sam Whitefield advanced to the finals of the Pasadena Bar Association's speech tournament on Saturday, and will be one of two students to compete for a $5,000 scholarship decided by the audience of 150 lawyers and judges at the association’s law day on May 10.

Whitefield, a senior at , delivered his 7-minute speech on the “role of the 21st century protester” over multiple rounds, as the field was narrowed to 21 contestants, then five, then two.

The La Canada High School team, which also included seniors Stephen Costello and Buck Miller and freshman Lucas Drill – took home the third-place team trophy.

About two dozen area schools participated in the daylong contest held at La Salle High School, where the other topics include “classified information” and “media and the courtroom.”
