Patch Blog: Talented Local Artists to Shine on June 2

An ocean-themed multimedia fine-art art opening reception is on June 2 at 7 p.m. at the  on Foothill Blvd in La Canada.

The "Clear Visions" multimedia art show will run from June 2 through July 7. The show's focus is capturing the beauty and drama of the sea. Landscape artist and owner of the gallery, Michael Humphries, along with other talented artists, will include some of their best pieces for the summer art show.

Jeffrey Hitch will display his beautiful stained art glass pieces, while watercolor artist, Julie Hill, will have some lovely pieces hanging on the walls. Michael Humphries will introduce pieces into the show from ceramic artist, Mims Ellis. Ellis is a native Southern Californian. She has been working in ceramics for 14 years.

I talked to Ellis about the upcoming art show. “Playing in the mud” has been extremely fulfilling for Ellis. She enjoys fashioning clay into interesting shapes. Her one-of-a-kind pieces are made with various textures and unique handmade stamps. Ellis uses the hard and soft slab method of hand building, instead of throwing on the wheel. This allows a more organic feel and greater range of shapes.

She enjoys experimenting with glaze combinations to achieve swirling movements of colors and surfaces. The best part of Mim’s stoneware is they are functional, yet also a beautiful piece of art.
