La Cañada Artist to Exhibit at Millionaire's Row

Karen Winters' impressionistic landscapes reveal inspiration from natural scenes both far from and close to her La Cañada home.

La Cañada artist Karen Winters will be exhibiting a collection of her representational paintings at the second annual Art on Millionaire’s Row festival tomorrow at the Altadena Public Library. Winters, who completed a successful career in broadcast news and documentary filmmaking before committing to art full-time, focuses on creating works inspired by the natural world, including favorite local spots and the Arroyo Seco. She describes her landscapes as drawing from the impressionist tradition and realism, and travels through out California to paint “en plein air” – outdoors.

“I consider myself a contemporary impressionist, although I incorporate a lot of realism in my work. I borrow from both of these historic traditions and unify them in my own way,” Winters said of her soft yet recognizable landscapes and portraits. “Representational art covers a wide variety of styles from very painterly impressionism to realism to photo-realism.

Michel Chabon, an organizer for the festival, described Winters works as “remarkable California Impressionist paintings.”

“Nature is my primary inspiration but I also do portraiture,” Winters said, noting that she is pleased to paint both human and animal subjects. “I love doing commissions because it makes people so happy to have something created especially for them.”

Art on Millionaire’s Row, a festival of arts and crafts, will feature dozens of local artists and crafters displaying and selling their works. Live music, snacks, and projects for kids will also be part of the daylong event.

Winters is happy to be part of the festival. “I love doing outdoor shows because it gives me the opportunity to talk directly to about my work with people who love representational art and to hear about beautiful places to paint that I may not know about.”

“She’s really an extraordinary person,” said Choban, “We are happy to have her with us this year.”

Art on Millionaire’s Row will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Altadena Library, 600 East Mariposa Ave., Altadena. For more information and to enjoy a preview of Winter’s art, check out her website and visit her page on Facebook.
