La Cañada Flintridge Plans Organics Recycling Workshops, Free Compost Giveaway

Residents can learn about recycling food waste and gardening with compost to help reduce landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE, CA — A free compost giveaway and workshops set for November aim to help residents and businesses learn about composting, organics recycling and California’s environmental regulations, La Cañada Flintridge officials announced this week.

Two workshops are scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9, at City Hall, 1 Civic Center Drive.

A commercial workshop at 10 a.m. will cover organics recycling requirements, available waivers and compliance information for businesses.

Public Works Department staff members will also host a booth at the Farmers Market on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is at 1300 Foothill Blvd., across from Memorial Park.

Staff will share information about California Senate Bill 1383 and distribute free bags of compost, vegetable seeds and compost pails. The 2016 law sets goals for reducing organic waste sent to landfills and related methane emissions.

Officials said giveaway items are available only to La Cañada Flintridge residents while supplies last.

During the first two hours of the giveaway, compost will be limited to two bags per household. Compost pails are limited to one per household, and households that previously received a pail are not eligible for another.

“We all have a role in protecting our environment, and these events are a great opportunity for our community to learn how to ‘go green’ in their daily lives,” Mayor Jeanne Kim Hobson said in a statement. “By providing residents and businesses with the information and resources to build eco-friendly habits, we are collectively building a cleaner, more sustainable La Cañada Flintridge.”
