Man Jumped in Front of Amtrak Train After Trying to Kill Wife: Police

GLENDALE, CA -- A man deliberately stepped into the path of an Amtrak commuter train a day after he tried to kill his estranged wife, Glendale police said Tuesday in confirming his death was a suicide.

Henrik Manokian, 57, died shortly before noon Monday near San Fernando Road and Doran Street.

According to police, he had slashed his estranged wife's throat about 5:50 p.m. Sunday in the 3700 block of Mayfield Avenue. She was found on the street by passersby, who called 911. The 50-year-old victim underwent surgery and was hospitalized in stable condition.

"Through the course of the investigation, the victim's estranged husband ... was identified as the suspect," according to a police statement. "Throughout the rest of the night and the following morning, detectives began actively searching for the suspect who was known to be living out of his vehicle."

On Monday, police learned that a man -- later identified as Manokian -- had been struck by an Amtrak train after telling a passerby that he wanted to end his life.

The witness contacted employees of a nearby business and asked them to call police, saying it appeared the man was going to commit suicide. But about the same time, southbound Amtrak train 774 approached Doran Street, and Manokian "intentionally ran in front of the train and was struck," police reported.

Manokian's vehicle was found parked nearby.
