Mount Wilson Observatory opens telescopes to the public for a night of viewing Mars, Saturn and more.
Mount Wilson Observatory invites public to view with historic 60 inch and 100 inch telescopes. Date set for Saturday, July 30 6pm-1am.
The Mount Wilson Observatory's Public ticketed nights have a dual 60 inch and 100 inch viewing session coming up on Saturday, July 30. Guests are invited to purchase tickets and come up to look through the telescopes for a half night of celestial viewing. Both scopes will be available during the night, with two groups switching telescopes at the midpoint of the night. If you have never seen Saturn through a telescope, you will be blown away by the view through either scope. July is a beautiful month for observing with mild night time temperatures and steady viewing conditions.
These telescopes were each the largest telescopes in the world when completed. The 60 inch was finished in 1908 and reigned as the largest in the world until the 100 inch was completed in 1917. The 100 inch was the world's largest until the Palomar 200 inch was completed in 1948, a 31 year reign! The 112 year old Mount Wilson Observatory is located just 19 miles up Angeles Crest Highway and overlooks Pasadena and the entire Los Angeles Basin. It is open every day for the public to walk around and offers docent lead tours on weekends until the end Of November.
