Voice of SpongeBob Squarepants' Squidward Faces DUI Charge After Arrest

Officers responding to call of a car stopped in the middle of the street and found Rodger Bumpass leaning against it.

Rodger Bumpass, who voices the Squidward character on the SpongeBob Squarepants cartoon program, was facing a possible DUI charge Wednesday after his arrest in Burbank.

Bumpass, 64, of Burbank, was taken into custody about 11 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of South Fairview Street, said Burbank police Sgt. Claudio Losacco. He was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and released the following morning after posting $15,000 bail. No court date was set.

Officers went to the location “regarding a vehicle stopped in the middle of the street,” Losacco said in a statement.

“Upon arrival, officers saw a blue PT Cruiser stopped in the middle of the street and a man leaning against the car,” Losacco said. “The man walked away when the officers approached. The officers noticed he was very unsteady on his feet and nearly fell.

“The man ... displayed objective symptoms of alcohol intoxication,” Losacco said. “He was unable to satisfactorily complete the field sobriety tests and ultimately (was) arrested for DUI.

“He later submitted to a breath test, which showed his (blood alcohol content) was substantially over the legal limit of .08 percent,” Losacco said. “Bumpass admitted to driving to the location and said he was trying to get home.”
