LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Laguna Beach police officers are working to make city streets safer, after the department announced a DUI checkpoint to be held Friday, June 5.
The checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed location from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., according to the Laguna Beach Police Department.
"DUI Checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes," a LBPD news release read. "The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road."
Residents were reminded by the LBPD that impaired driving does not only include alcohol intoxication. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with safe driving, and marijuana — whether recreational or medical — is considered impaired driving.
Drivers with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, the department said.
