With seismic retrofit costs soaring and state law barring standalone ERs, city leaders, residents, and hospital executives are exploring legislative fixes and new models to avoid losing an emergency department that handles roughly 17,000 visits a year.
• Oro, a trauma support dog for first responders, is the future of addressing mental health needs, officials say (yoursun.com) — Laguna Beach Fire's new trauma support dog, Oro, is helping firefighters, lifeguards, and other first responders process the emotional toll of difficult calls, including a recent child drowning off Treasure Island. Trained to sense stress and comfort crews during debriefs, Oro is part of a growing statewide Critical Incident Stress K-9 program that aims to normalize mental health support in emergency services.
• High school football: Orange County's Week 2 stat leaders (ocregister.com) — Laguna Beach High quarterback J. Hurst and receiver B. Stringham both cracked Orange County's Week 2 football stat leaderboards, highlighting strong performances in the passing and receiving categories.
