Dana Point: Orange County Beach Hazards Over Blistering July Weekend

DANA POINT, CA — It's hot out there, southern California. And with the record heat, comes beach hazards according to the National Weather Service. With an influx of swimmers coming to the coast to escape the blistering heat across Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and Inland Orange County the National Weather Service reminds swimmers to understand and respect strong rip currents, how to escape them and to always swim near a lifeguard.

Expect strong rip and longshore currents, as well as elevated surf from Saturday morning through Wednesday evening, July 12 according to the NWS release.

Surf from 3- to 5-feet on Saturday is expected to increase to 4- to 6-feet by Sunday through Wednesday according to the NWS. Isolated sets of up to 7-feet are expected on South facing beaches of Orange County and Northern San Diego County.

"Elevated surf and rip and longshore currents will increase the risk of drowning, especially for inexperienced swimmers," the National Weather Service spokesperson said.

The beach hazard statements are released when there is a threat of strong rip currents and elevated surf.

Minor tidal overflow is possible at local beaches.

"Obey posted warnings, signs and flags and talk to a lifeguard before swimming," NWS said. "Use caution when in or near the water and always swim near a lifeguard."
