Officers arrived at an active domestic violence situation in Laguna Beach overnight. A man, with 5 kids, refused to exit the Poplar St. home

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Did you witness police activity early Tuesday morning? You weren't alone. Police responded to the scene of the 400 block of Poplar Street late Monday evening in response to a domestic violence investigation, officers said. One man was ultimately taken into custody on suspicion of committing domestic violence inside the home, Laguna Beach Police said.
Officers arrived on scene of an "active domestic violence investigation," at approximately 9 p.m. Monday.
A woman contacted police saying that her husband "had assaulted her, and that five children were still inside the home," LBPD Sgt. Jim Cota said. The woman alerted the police that there was a handgun inside the home, and that "her husband had threatened to use it in the past."

Officers arrived and made several attempts to speak with Carlton, however he refused to cooperate, Cota said. The OCSD SWAT team arrived to assist, along with two canines, an LBPD drone and other Laguna Beach detectives.
Hours of negotiations ensued, ending with Carlton choosing to walk from the home of his own accord, along with the children, when he ultimately surrendered to officers early Tuesday morning.
