Heisler Park 9/11 Memorial Vandalized

The sculptor, Jorg Dubin, noticed damage had been done to the mirrored sphere section of "Semper Memento."

"Semper Memento," the memorial sculpture in Heisler Park that was dedicated last September to victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, has been vandalized.

The monument's sculptor, Jorg Dubin, noticed three small indentations to the mirrored sphere portion of the piece this week while polishing it, he told Laguna Beach Patch in an email. The dents were not there when Dubin was cleaning it two weeks earlier.

Dubin says that the dents "appear to have been made with a pointed metal object with some force, as the metal surface is also gouged at the point of impact. There are also some surface scratches on the plaque side of the sphere about two thirds of the way down centered on the sphere. This had to be intentional as the surface of the sphere is very hard and would require some force to damage it."

Dubin reported the damage to Sian Poeschel, the city's Cultural Arts Manager, who notified the police. The report is still being completed, according to Lt. Jason Kravetz of the Laguna Beach Police Department.
