Helmet Saves Life of Motorcyclist Downed in Laguna Beach

A helmet likely saved a motorcycle rider today when he crashed on Laguna Canyon Road near Pacific Coast Highway, a fire captain said.

A 36-year-old Laguna Beach man, whose name was unavailable, was headed north when he crashed just before 11 a.m. at 935 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach Police Capt. Jason Kravetz said.

The victim was thrown from his bike and ended up in the grass median, Kravetz said. The motorcycle came to rest in  southbound lanes, he said.

The man was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority said.

"Luckily, he had a helmet on or he would have been killed," he said. "He hit his head pretty hard and sustained a major dent in his helmet."

The man also suffered "significant cuts," he said.
