Laguna Beach Launches Interactive Evacuation Map For Residents

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — You can never predict when an emergency will happen, but the City of Laguna Beach is providing residents with a tool for navigating an emergency situation this past month.

Last December, the City of Laguna Beach released the city's new neighborhood evacuation map, an interactive resource designed to help residents locate their evacuation zone in the event of an emergency or disaster, the city announced on Twitter Friday.

“This updated map website will allow public safety officials to more accurately relay what neighborhoods and zones are being evacuated during an emergency to residents in real-time," Laguna Beach Emergency Operations Coordinator Brendan Manning said in a news release.

Roughly 85 percent of Laguna Beach and its surrounding 16,000 acres of land are designated by CalFire as a "Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone," the city said in a news release. Many Laguna Beach residents will remember rampant wildfires in 2015 and 2018, which sparked in the open space surrounding the city. In one of the worst wildfires to impact Laguna Beach, 441 structures were lost due to the fire in 1993.

Additionally, the only two roads in and out of Laguna Beach — Pacific Coast Highway and Laguna Canyon Road — are located within the wildfire hazard zone.

The city's new neighborhood evacuation map is broken down into 22 different "Evacuation Management Zones," with information on types of evacuation orders.
