Recent victories at the Ancient Mariner Regatta were also celebrated; the Mariners had a total of 60 competitors on five teams! Mariners 936 once again proved themselves to be able bodied Seamen with Boatswain Spencer Wetzel’s team winning one first highest (Clipper), and Boatswain’s mates teams bringing home three second highest (Schooner) and one third highest (Sloop). Events included Rope Climb, Team Swim, Ship Swim, Obstacle Course, Code Flags, Scuttlebutt, Mystery, Heaving Line, Swimming, First aid, Radio, Sailing, Obstacle Course and Rope Climb. Mariners also qualified to participate in the drill off…their rendition of the elephant walk will become a thing of legend!
Each year at the Bridge of Honor, the Cvengros family awards a graduating Mariner a generous college scholarship, to honor the memory of their son Christopher Cvengros. The scholarship is awarded to the Mariner deemed to embody a great work ethic, both at school and Sea Scouts, and who demonstrates the love of others through community service and having a keen concern for safety at sea. Chris was a very active, dedicated member of the Mariner Sea Scouts. His tragic death in 1996 shocked and saddened the close knit community of young people that shared with him a love of the sea and all things nautical.
