Measure KK: How it Would Change the Laguna Beach Landscape

The City Manager of Laguna Beach released a new map regarding the added locations for medical marijuana dispensaries should Measure KK pass

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — The City of Laguna Beach released a correction on Monday regarding an informational mailer on Measure KK sent to every Laguna Beach resident in late September.

"On September 28, an informational mailer was sent to all Laguna Beach households about Measure KK, an initiative that would repeal the City’s ban on medical marijuana dispensaries and allow for at least two dispensaries," the City Manager's office stated. "On the front side of the mailer was a map depicting possible medical marijuana dispensary locations throughout the City, including: Laguna Canyon, Downtown Village, along Coast Highway and Glenneyre Street between Legion and Diamond Streets, and in the Aliso Creek Shopping Center across from the Montage."

The map omitted other parts of Laguna Beach, such as the southern portion of the City south of the Montage and Irvine Cove.

"It was believed at that time these areas could not serve as possible locations for medical marijuana dispensaries," the City Manager's office stated in release. "After further review and analysis of the initiative as well as the City’s zoning maps, it is estimated that there are five other possible medical marijuana dispensary locations in the southern portion of the City south of the Montage."

The five other possible dispensary locations are concentrated along Coast Highway between Eagle Rock Way and 4th Avenue.

A map portraying the additional possible dispensary locations was provided by the City Manager's office.
According to the group "Defeat Measure KK - No on Overturning Laguna Beach's Pot Dispensary Ban," the passing of Measure KK would:
  • Make Laguna Beach the only South Orange County city with dispensaries
  • Eliminate local control and oversight
  • Promote marijuana use with area children
  • Provide no additional public safety funding for the city
  • Open the retail dealership door.

"I encourage all residents to make an informed decision on the issue," John Pietig, City Manager of Laguna Beach said in an online message.
