Rock Slide Hits Beach Access Stairway In Laguna Beach, City Says

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — A rock slide at Agate Street beach shut down a popular access point in Laguna Beach this week.

The rock slide happened Tuesday afternoon just below the stairway viewpoint, according to the City of Laguna Beach.

Witnesses to the rock slide said Fire and Marine Safety crews responded swiftly and shut down access to the stairway.

Resident Ben Young wrote on Facebook that he watched the cliff collapse when it happened Tuesday afternoon.

"I was standing on the lower landing and noticed that it was vibrating a lot more than usual," Young posted on Facebook. "I looked over on the point of the rocks and there was a four-inch wide crack going all the way down to the ocean."

Young wrote that he called in the crack, but it was too late.

"Literally as soon as I called it in the entire thing collapsed into the ocean."

According to city officials, residents should avoid the area while a geologist conducts tests on the rocks in the area.

No injuries were reported in the rock slide.

"Bummed! Love those stairs on my jog/stair repeats," Julie Coulston commented. "Hang in there Laguna Beach!"
