Search Resumes for Missing Swimmer off Dana Point
The swimmer was identified publicly only as 60-year-old man visiting from out of state.

Searchers resumed looking today for a 60-year-old man who disappeared while bodysurfing in big waves Saturday in Dana Point.
The recovery effort resumed off Salt Creek Beach at 6 a.m. today, and included Orange County lifeguards, sheriff’s deputies and the U.S. Coast Guard, said lifeguards Chief Jason Young. It “will continue until 6 p.m this evening, at which time the operation and conditions will be re-assessed,” Young said.
The swimmer was identified publicly only as 60-year-old man visiting from out of state. “He was last seen by family/friends in the water just prior to being reported missing,” according to Young.

Orange County Lifeguards were informed that the man was missing off Salt Creek Beach near Tower 2 about 11:35 a.m. Saturday. An immediate search was launched, he said.
The man went missing as huge breakers rolled in from a strong south swell, which was producing 5- to 7-foot waves with powerful shore breaks and strong currents, Young said.

The swells were generated by Hurricane Lowell, 850 miles distant.
“Swimmers are encouraged to use caution when coming to the beach in the next several days and only experienced swimmers (and) surfers should enter the water,” Young said.
Lifeguards also recommended that swimmers check with lifeguards before entering the water and to stay near a manned lifeguard tower if possible.
