The Friends of the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter are getting serious about a very stinky subject. Skunk spray and your pet is no joke!

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — We know the hills are alive with the Laguna Beach goats, but this year, be wary of skunks as you're out and about!

According to the Volunteers at the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter, skunks are becoming a nuisance in the Laguna Beach area.

"They are good to have around, because they feed on pests," a spokesperson for the group wrote on Facebook.

Still, if your pet crosses a skunk's path, chances are you'll be dealing with a whole different animal.

Leave the tomato juice for your Sunday Bloody Mary, they say. If you're trying to rid your pet of skunk-smell, don't despair! Here are some tactics to eliminate the odor from a sprayed pet!

According to the Volunteers of the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter, a secret recipe that works is:

  • 1-quart Hydrogen Peroxide (labeled 3 percent)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent

Mix the three ingredients and bathe your pet in the resulting "shampoo." (Mix will not save, so use it all in one, two or three bathings!)

Allow the mixture to sit before rinsing for at least 5 minutes. Rinse them with tap water, and repeat as necessary.

If your pet was sprayed in the eyes, flush with water right away!
