Thousand Steps Beach In South Laguna Reopens After Staircase Repairs

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Laguna Beach residents have mourned the temporary closure of Thousand Steps Beach since mid-September, after OC Parks announced the popular destination would be closed for several months due to repairs.

Mourn no longer, Laguna Beach. Thousand Steps Beach is reopening Saturday morning, OC Parks announced on Twitter Friday.

The well-known attraction was closed after a maintenance check that found broken steps and exposed steel rebar on the 12-flight stair access to Thousand Steps Beach, Voice of OC reported in September. County Park officials ruled "major repairs" necessary to provide safe beach access, and the steep, canopy-lined staircase — along with the beach — was closed to the public.

In addition to its steep, burn-inducing staircase, Thousand Steps Beach is well-known for its glorious surf, steep sandstone cliffs and beautiful sights. It's a popular spot among skim boarders and body surfers, as well as explorers who are keen on navigating sea caves and tidepools.

Now that major repairs have been made, all 218 steps leading down to Thousand Steps Beach are ready to be stepped up and down by visitors who make the trek. Just be sure to drink all your liquids and shake the sand out of your shoes before you make that journey back up to Pacific Coast Highway.

Thousand Steps Beach is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and can be found just north of 9th Street on Pacific Coast Highway with metered street parking nearby.
