Abandoned Guinea Pig 'Sugar Buttons' Rescued From Edge Of Cliff In Laguna Niguel
Concerned residents reported spotting the guinea pig in dense brush on the edge of a cliff next to a greenbelt in Laguna Niguel.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA — An abandoned guinea pig was rescued from the edge of a cliff in Laguna Niguel this week, the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center reported.
The guinea pig was found after concerned Laguna Niguel residents spotted a guinea pig in dense brush on the edge of a cliff next to a greenbelt, a spokesperson for the center said.

When Senior Animal Control Officer Sgt. Stewart arrived to the scene, he found the guinea pig and set up a humane trap by using lettuce as bait to lure the guinea pig. Ultimately, Sgt. Stewart was able to capture the healthy guinea pig by hand.

The guinea pig — affectionately named "Sugar Buttons" by the center — will be put up for adoption once the rodent's five-day hold times out.

"It's disheartening to witness instances where small domestic animals are left abandoned in the wild," Stewart said. "Guinea pigs, being domesticated animals, are ill-equipped to survive in such environments."
