Risso Dolphin Stuns With Smile In Dana Point Waters: Dana Wharf Photos

DANA POINT, CA — Have you ever seen a dolphin smile?

Travelers aboard a Dana Wharf Whale Watching vessel were treated to a spectacular sight this past week: a pod of over 50 Risso's dolphin.

"An amazing encounter with a pod of over 50 Risso's dolphin," Photographer Laura Lopez wrote. "Very energetic and entertaining while seeming to smile each time they surfaced."

According to Lopez, who works with Dana Wharf Whale Watching, the dolphins are typically found in deeper waters further offshore.

This pod, however, was headed south just three miles out inside the drop-off.
