Watch 14 Blue Whales Frolic Off Orange County Coast

Travelers aboard a Dana Wharf Whale Watch vessel Monday saw 14 blue whales while navigating Orange County waters.

DANA POINT, CA — Travelers aboard a Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching boat were treated to the show of their lives while navigating the ocean Monday — a rare "blue whale soup" congregating in Orange County waters.

"Today we saw 14 blue whales and a common dolphin," Dana Wharf Whale Watch said in a statement. "On our first two trips, we saw groups of four blue whales often swimming very close together — side by side, rolling and displaying ventral pleats, pectoral fins and tails."

According to the statement, the whales were racing across the water at high speeds. At other times, the groups of whales seemed to be following one another in a line before bursting through the water's surface all at once.

"One of two whales would separate from the group and then rejoin," the statement said. "These behaviors indicate the whales could likely be engaged in courtship."
