MOVIE REVIEW: '7 PSYCHOPATHS'

Who knew that such a cute dog could cause so much chaos?

This Quentin Tarantino esque feature, directed by Martin McDonagh, sees Marty (Colin Farrell), a struggling, alcoholic screenwriter go on a an unpredictable journey on route to completing his latest piece of work, Seven Psychopaths.

However, with an already extremely short attention span, and an affinity for hard liquor, this will be a challenge within itself. Billy (Sam Rockwell) is Marty's best friend, an unemployed actor and part-time dog thief, who wants to help Marty complete his screenplay by any means necessary. Hans (Christopher Walken) is Billy’s associate in the dog kidnapping business, an overly religious man with a calm demeanor but a nasty mean streak.

Together these misfits end up entangled in one of the most elaborate dog heists ever seen on the big screen. When Billy and Hans capture the prized Shih Tzu of mob boss, Charlie (Woody Harrelson), unbeknown to them, they become his next target, and he is known for being a cold hearted killer.

Throughout the film Marty begins piecing together his screenplay from the events that take place, as he and his friends try to escape the clutches of the mob boss. After stalling and hitting a writers block in the early stages of the film, the action and hijinks that ensue, pick the pace up of his feature film. Those in the audience are not left with any dull moments, as the way in which the film is structured, makes you think and really focus on all of the Psychopaths at one time. The film is essentially a story being told within a story. As Marty is writing his movie, the film is being played out before the audience in its entirety.

With such a long list of upper echelon actors, the film doesn't disappoint in the theatrical department. With twists and turns in the story at every turn, the film really does deliver more than you would expect. With flash forwards, flash backs, and constant adjusting of Marty’s novel, which is coinciding with the film itself, it is an interesting mixture of action, comedy and suspence. Definitely worth a watch. Be warned, the language is a little vulgar from time to time, and there are flashes (no pun intended) of nudity. Although all of these things are tastefully done, as much as they can be I guess.

To say that all actors delved deep within their bag of tricks to pull this off would be an understatement. Farrell is both funny and emotional, a side of him we do not usually see in his work. Perhaps even poking fun at his own highly documented and noted alcoholism, by playing a character with serious alcohol issues himself. Rockwell plays the psychopath role to a “T”. The class act that is Mr. Christopher Walken was superb. He continues to show why he has managed to stay in the limelight for so long. Woody Harrelson pulled off a role that normally wouldn't suit his style, but kudos to him and his outstanding work in this feature.

I give it 2.75 patches out of 5.
