MOVIE REVIEW: 'Sleepwalk with Me,' Far From Sleepy

Matt is a horrible comedian who has no direction in his life. The stress from those around him to become successful compel him to sleep walk and his life spirals out of control.

Synopsis: Sleepwalk with Me, is about a burgeoning stand-up comedian who tries to combat the struggles of his stagnant career, a stale relationship, and the unpredictable ongoings of severe sleepwalking he is desperate to ignore. Starring Mike Birbiglia and Lauren Ambrose.

Matt Pandamiglio (played by Birbiglia) is a struggling comedian in his 30s, with no direction in his life. From the outside looking in, the only good thing in his life is his girlfriend of 8 years, Abby (Ambrose). Matt, on the other hand, feels otherwise.

The movie is set in up state New York where Matt has a series of jobs, most notably as a bartender in a very small not so frequented bar. He tries his hand at stand-up comedy in between serving drinks and cleaning the bathrooms, however, to no avail. He is an awful comedian and has no goals in his life.

After seeing his sister get engaged and then married, he begins to feel pressure from his family to get his act together. His over bearing father puts the most pressure on him to marry and start a family, both of which are not on his list of things to do.

One night, by chance he meets an agent at his bar and he soon books gigs all across the East Coast. This being said, he is still getting no laughs. As the pressure mounts for him to become successful, he begins to sleepwalk at night. His dreams are acted out in his sleepwalking and coincidentally he dreams of everything he is afraid of and feeling pressure to obtain, the dreams range from becoming a husband and a father to jumping out windows to escape responsibility.

The movie unfolds and Matt’s life is portrayed on the big screen. His sleepwalking is cleverly entwined into the plot. The movie was well written and directed. There were some moments of awkwardness here and there, but the chuckles came pretty frequently. Definitely an outside-the-box movie that was refreshing to watch due to its uniqueness.
