Dana Point Women’s Club Gets “Back to School and Back to Philanthropy"
DPWC welcomed its members "Back to School and Back to Philanthropy" after a summer hiatus, with a luncheon including book and food drives.

Dana Point Women’s Club (DPWC) got its new fiscal year off to a roaring start with a very well attended September 5th meeting themed “Back to School, Back to Philanthropy”. The hospitality committee did a beautiful job decorating the Club-owned Community House with gold balloons and chargers, hot air balloon-themed florals and framed photos at each table depicting the Club’s many philanthropic programs.
Club President Kathy Belanger welcomed over 50 members and guests, while First Vice President Judy Amiano introduced the speaker, Dr. Christopher Brown, Capistrano Unified School District's new Superintendent. Dr. Brown related the many successes of the District as well as the challenges they currently face including low birth rates leading to lower enrollment and school funding constraints. He presented impressive statistics for CUSD, an award winning South Orange County school district with an enrollment of over 40,000 kids at 64 schools and programs. CUSD consistently exceeds Orange County and State academic standards and shows steadily increasing AP scores.

Several dignitaries were present, including CUSD Trustee Amy Hanacek, a DPWC member, and Kristen Nelson, Principal of RH Dana Elementary School, recipient of DPWC’s annual Project Literacy book drive. Principal Nelson expressed her sincere thanks for the Club’s donation to the school library and classrooms. Those who missed the drive and would like to help the School with new books are encouraged to send them directly to the School using its Amazon Book Wish List. Fifth District OC Supervisor, Katrina Foley, an honorary member of the Club, was represented by District Policy Analyst Tyler Mosher.

Members also donated peanut butter, proteins and pantry staples to support the Club’s annual Back to School Project FAM food drive. An impressive load of groceries was donated to Family Assistance Ministries to help feed hungry kids and needy families.
The lively meeting wrapped up with Committee reports including details presented by Marla Freeman, Ways & Means Chair of DPWC’s upcoming Chili Cook Off, Trolley Art Tour, and other events. South Orange County Women interested in membership are urged to visit DPWC’s website to learn more and contact the Club’s Membership Chair.
