Dana Point's Newest Park To Honor Surf History

DANA POINT, CA — Dana Point's rich surf history will be main stage at the new park slated for opening as early as June. The park, located near the new construction of South Cove luxury condominium complex, will open this summer.

Homes in the new development will be priced from $800,000 to $1 million, and range from one to three bedrooms. Ground breaking for the park and complex was delayed due to recent rains, but the project is moving forward as planned.

"Doheny Beach is surfing," Mayor Debra Lewis said of the new development, as reported by the Orange County Register. "It began here. The two are inextricably linked. Nothing will remind people of the fact better than the life-sized Hobie Cat with Hobie at the helm."

The statue, and model, show Alter's likeness riding a Hobie Cat. Other life-sized sculptures of local surf legends will also appear, installed over several months, according to the city of Dana Point's community development director.

Encinitas land developer Zephyr donated the land for the park that will feature the sculpture. The developer selected Bill Limebrook, a local artist who grew up on Beach Road, where many of the surfing greats have lived.

"The parks will be a forever landmark. The surf park is relevant with my 14- and 16-year-olds as it is with 70-year-old surfers from the area," Chris Beucler, Zephyr's chief operating officer said. "It's neat when we can say that about a project.
