Deadly Shooting, Explosion At Laguna Niguel Apartment
Deputies confronted a suspect armed with a hammer, according to OCSD.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA —A suspect, thought to be armed with a hammer, was shot and killed inside a Laguna Niguel apartment, Monday afternoon. Orange County Sheriff's Department deputies surrounded a Laguna Niguel home after 12:30 p.m. Monday after receiving multiple disturbance calls.
A man and a woman, both in their 30s, were inside their apartment complex in the 40 block of Coral Sea when officers arrived, OCSD spokeswoman Carrie Braun told Patch.
When they attempted to make an entrance, deputies discovered the man was armed with a hammer. They confronted the man, believed to be in his 30s, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The man died at the scene, Braun said. The woman, also in her 30s, was uninjured. No deputies were hurt in the exchange.

Shortly after the shooting, there was an explosion from a device inside the residence. Though the details on the explosion are unclear, a deputy on the scene—who is a member of the hazardous devices squad—was able to render the device safe, Braun told us. There were no other explosive devices at the apartment.
The Orange County District Attorney's Office will be investigating the incident.
