Gray Whale Calf Born In Front Of Amazed Crowd In Dana Point

Travelers aboard a Dana Wharf Whale Watch vessel were treated to a special surprise this week: a mother gray whale giving birth.

DANA POINT, CA — Travelers aboard the Dana Wharf Whale Watch vessel Ocean Adventure were treated to an awe-inspiring scene Monday: a gray whale giving birth to a baby calf in the water.

The mother whale was initially spotted by ocean travelers riding a Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari vessel.

According to reports, the mother whale was swimming in circles before she gave birth to a newborn calf.

"We saw the newborn calf; just minutes old! The mom was gently lifting the calf to help it take breaths while the calf seemed to be resting on its back," a Dana Wharf spokesperson said. "This pair will continue south to the warm waters of Baja for the winter, where this calf will gain about 50 pounds a day and grow about a foot in length each month."
