Homeless in Laguna Niguel

The El Lazo basketball courts near the Ziggurat have become a gathering place for transients.

Laguna Niguel is known for its immaculate streets, quiet neighborhoods and ocean breezes. However, residents might be surprised to learn that there are quite a few homeless folks calling Laguna Niguel home, too.

While out and about, Laguna Niguel Patch photographer and local resident Barton Mac Leod spotted these homeless people parked and camped out in recreational vehicles under a patch of trees at the El Lazo basketball courts.

He said he noticed several of the RVs hadn't moved even after he paid three separate visits to the area. Portable toilets are also available to those using the basketball courts.

This is federal property (the parking lot of the also known as the Ziggurat) that the city of Laguna Niguel leased in 2004 to build the El Lazo basketball courts.

As a city recreation facility, parking is permitted from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. for the El Lazo basketball courts.
